My idea to improve this place...
Through our expansion into the vacated Miami Art Museum building in the Miami-Dade Cultural Center, we will catalyze a rebirth of the facility as a mecca of cultural activity. HistoryMiami will reinvigorate the vision of the late Miami-Dade County Mayor, Jack Orr, who commissioned architect Philip Johnson to design the Mediterranean-style facility as a gathering place for Miamians.
Specifically, we seek to expand the utilization of the facility's 20,000 sq. ft. outdoor plaza by adding needed programming infrastructure and promoting its use by the community. We also propose to build-out a multifunctional museum courtyard (located between our two museum buildings) with a performance space, shading elements, and public art.

Near the County’s government center, courthouses, and numerous businesses at the western edge of downtown, this plaza is underutilized by the vibrant weekday population of workers. Its use further fades on the weekends, when residents and visitors are pulled to new performing arts and museum developments elsewhere.
This once exciting cultural center is primed for a community-enriching revival. We will leverage the creative potential of downtown to reinvigorate the space into a dynamic place that will attract and connect South Florida's diverse population. This place, once infused with lively community-oriented activities such as festivals, concerts, film screenings, and much more, will emerge a vibrant community center for all to enjoy.
