Single in the Magic City
I had found myself having a major case of writers’ block. You would think I would have an endless array of material…being myself “Single in the Magic City” and all, but I just couldn’t seem to focus, maybe a case of way too much material? Well, there I was last Saturday night reviewing all the exciting Downtown Miami events when all of a sudden my focus was drawn entirely to the TV audio. I was intently listening to a commercial from Grey’s Anatomy…and then it hit me…an ultra-inspiring line…a statement that totally captured the message that I couldn’t seem to find the words to convey:
“I believe we can do extraordinary together rather than ordinary apart” – Grey’s Anatomy
I realize that I’ve learned many things during the past 4+years of being single. I remember at the very beginning of transitioning from married to single life feeling very intimidated of going it alone. I found myself (literally) in Downtown Miami…a place that after all defines “extraordinary”. You can’t put your finger on just one quality…it’s a unique combination which for decades has inspired the timeless tagline “The Magic City”. So what better place to find yourself that in Downtown Miami…the absolute core of the Magic?
So how does this apply to Love? Well, it’s quite simple…it’s all about the message within that sound bite…the “extraordinary together” effect…
You see in time you learn that you can be perfectly “ok” by yourself…you will enjoy your own company. I’ve taken myself out to a nice lunches and dinners on many occasions. Being “Single” at this stage is not about finding “just anyone” … it’s about the chance to find the “Magic”. You also know that you can be “ok” with an ordinary relationship…universally known as “settling”…but why?
After all, “Solitude is painful when one is young, but delightful when one is more mature”, as Albert Einstein so insightfully stated. I know he wasn’t referring to chronological age (40’s are the new 30’s right?)… Life Maturity happens; we are all on our own personal journeys. I think the layers we are most interested in are a good indication of where we are at in our life- maturity level. Focus on the exterior region of yourself or others and you’re in an “ordinary journey” …but it is within the deeper layers that true “Magic” lies.
Enjoy Downtown Miami and don’t settle for less than Extraordinary! SM
