Miami, FL – August 2, 2021 – The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County (@arshtcenter) is pleased to announce the return of free FAMILY FEST for the 2021-2022 season. The 14th season of FAMILY FEST features four thrilling performances for all ages, kicking off with a dance-filled celebration of Cuba with HAVANA HOP on November 27; followed by a wild introduction to the scientific method with DOKTOR KABOOM! LOOK OUT! SCIENCE IS COMING! on January 8, 2022; a musical journey through many cultures of the world with KATTAM AND HIS TAM-TAMS on March 19, 2022; and high-flying circus acts of CIRQUE KALABANTÉ on May 7, 2022.

FAMILY FEST is one of more than 10 ongoing Arsht Center programs committed to community engagement and deepening the experience of the performing arts for all Miami-Dade County residents. Having served more than 100,000 people throughout its 15-year history, the programs broaden community participation and open the sights, sounds and possibilities of the world through the performing arts. Programs include: Free Gospel Sundays, pairing Miami's best gospel artists with nationally renowned gospel headliners; The Heritage Project, a free salon series and annual festival featuring panel discussions surrounding  performing arts and social justice in the Black community;  AileyCamp Miami, a full-scholarship, six-week summer dance camp which uses dance as a vehicle for the personal development of young people; CommuniTea Dance, an annual celebration honoring Miami's LGBTQ+ community; Knight Masterworks Classical Conversations, a series of free lectures which give the audience insight into the musicians, composers and history of music presented in our Knight Masterworks Classical Music series; Camp Broadway, a weeklong musical theater camp for kids; Step Into Dance Master Classes, dance workshops for the community presented in conjunction with our Knight Masterworks Dance series; Accessing the Arts Residencies, art workshops for children and adults with disabilities;  Arsht on the Road, a new series of free pop-up performances that bring the arts into Miami-Dade County's diverse neighborhoods; and Arsht@Work, free professional development workshops for all industries.

Dance along to keep confidence and memories alive!

 

One actress portrays three generations of women in this interactive show written and performed by PAIGE HERNANDEZ with music by NICK THA 1DA.

 

Young Yelia dreams of making it big but there is one problem — her terrible stage fright! After seeking advice from her mother, Yeila embarks on a journey to Cuba to “find roots, get confidence and be amazing!” Yelia reconnects with her ailing grandmother and is inspired to create an unforgettable performance. Dance along in this joyful, interactive show that explores confidence by discovering roots and creating new ones.

DOKTOR KABOOM! LOOK OUT! SCIENCE IS COMING!

Join DOKTOR KABOOM! as he takes his audience on an educational tour of the modern scientific method, using humor and comedy while demonstrating spectacular applications of the physical sciences.

 

Aimed at ages 9+, topics include: safety; pressure and force; simple machines; velocity; application of science to everyday life; the scientific method (hypothesis and experimentation); multiple experimentation; constant discovery of new information and data; definitions: chemical reactions, exothermic, external and chemical formulas; mass; air pressure and demonstration versus experimentation.

KATTAM AND HIS TAM-TAMS

Music is the best passport to discovering the many cultures of the world!

 

To the sound of the n’goni, balafon, djembe, naffar, derbouka and dhol, percussionist KATTAM invites you to discover Africa, the Middle East and India through rhythm, song and dance! From African rap and desert dance to trance Sufi rhythm and Bollywood dance, Kattam never fails to entertain his audience. Accompanied by his monkey, Takoum, join Kattam on an incredible multicultural adventure!

CIRQUE KALABANTÉ: AFRIQUE EN CIRQUE

AFRIQUE EN CIRQUE is a highly colorful creation featuring a handful of amazing acrobats and musicians from CIRQUE KALABANTÉ performing their authentic choreography to the frantic rhythms of djembes and other native instruments of Guinea.

 

To the melodious sound of the kora, artistic director and company founder Yamoussa Bangoura takes us into a place that radiates the diversity of traditional African arts combined with the virtuosity of the North American modern circus performance.
